A Collection of Fiddle Tunes of New England & Related Traditions

Fiddle Tunes in abc Notation: Jigs

Here is the Jigs section of the web site, including tunes from the Lamprey River Band Tunebook and other jigs. In New England we generally refer to tunes in 6/8 time as jigs. Jigs are generally appropriate to play for contradances and square dances. It's worth being aware that while we refer to jigs in terms of timing, in many places a jig refers to the dance done to a tune rather than the tune itself. Often it refers to a solo dance. As such it may be in 6/8 time but it may be in 2/4 or 4/4 time as well (e.g., the Morris jig the Nutting Girl).

Some bands and callers seem not to play/ask for many jigs these days. I have observed that jigs are often played faster than reels, and indeed faster than dance tempo. Often the notes are played with fairly uniform timing and emphasis. That can be great for a show piece played in a concert or on a street corner; but it just doesn't work for dancing. Without turning this into a tutorial, there should be an emphasis on the first and fourth beats of the measure, and sometimes a minor emphasis on the third and sixth beats. The best way to learn would be to listen carefully to someone whose jig playing you enjoy and find danceable.

Notes:

  • Each section is presented in alphabetical order. Tunes  from the Lamprey River Band Tunebook are marked as such.
  • All tunes are in abc format, which allows music to be written in text form.
    • With free software it can be displayed as standard notation or it can be played back to you.

Useful Links:

  • How to display tunes as standard notation and play them back on your computer: tgo to this page.
  • To produce musical notation that looks like the PDFs on this web site, please go to this page and follow instructions given there.
  • The tunes are available on this page as downloadable abc and PDF documents.
  • A searchable listing of tunes on the web site is here. You can sort them by any column.
  • A listing of the sources I used in preparing this web site is here.
  • There is a chord book available to download in PDF format for all tunes on this web site.

N:like this (two notes/measure):

N:|: G G# | A B | E A | D F# | G G# | A A |1 E A | E E :]2 E E | A A |]

N:

N:This tune is clearly related to A Starry Night For A Ramble, as played by the Canterbury

N:Country Dance Orchestra. But despite being melodically very similar they are stylistically

N:so different that it's easy to miss the similarity. Chords are from the Joseph Allard recording
