Fiddle Tunes in abc Notation: Couples Dances Part 1
Polkas, Schottisches & Hornpipes Often Used For Schottisches

Polkas are grouped with marches and two-steps as they are very similar tune types. Because they are used for a couples dance I have put them in this section.

This page includes schottisches, as well as some hornpipes that are often played for schottisches. There are other hornpipes that are generally played as if they were reels. These are more suitable for use for a contra or square dance, and are included with the reels.

Notes:

  • Each section is presented in alphabetical order. Tunes  from the Lamprey River Band Tunebook are marked as such.
  • All tunes are in abc format, which allows music to be written in text form.
    • With free software it can be displayed as standard notation or it can be played back to you.

Useful Links:

  • How to display tunes as standard notation and play them back on your computer: go to this page.
  • To produce musical notation that looks like the PDFs on this web site, please go to this page and follow instructions given there.
  • The tunes are available on this page as downloadable abc and PDF documents.
  • A searchable listing of tunes on the web site is here. You can sort them by any column.
  • A listing of the sources I used in preparing this web site is here.
  • There is a chord book available to download in PDF format for all tunes on this web site.

T:The Chickadees' Polka

C:Bob McQuillen, October 1975

S:Bob McQuillen, $2Bob's Note Book Combination 1 & 2,$0 1982.

N:The melody in this version is as written in Bob's Note Book. There are no chords

N:written in for this tune so I did my best from listening and memory.

N:I also include a version from the playing of Rod and Randy Miller of New Hampshire.

N:Here are Bob's notes about the tune: "This is the tune the chickadees sing in

N:Mr. Scott Thomas' woodlot up in Norwich, Vt. I go up there every year, in the fall

N:when it's so beautiful, just to hear them sing it. (Sometimes I see a deer!)"

N:This is transcribed from the playing of Doug Protsik playing solo piano. In

N:places it's not obvious how it would translate to other instruments such as the fiddle.

N:The quarter note rests in the second part could be accompanied by an A natural bass note.

N:I will leave it to you to decide whether or not to slur the triplets. As Doug plays it,

N:the triplets in the A part don't feel slurred whereas the B-part triplets do.
